The Rain, It Comes...hopefully

We are desperate for rain and the forecasters are predicting rain Friday through Tuesday.  We are praying for it here at GRUB.  I might even wash my car just to insure it!  Besides the whole regional landscape being thirsty, our farm would really love it!  The natural watering would help baby our onion transplants.  It would allow us to break ground on our sunbaked acres. It would also enable us to plant our cover crops that will enrich our soil (more about that when we actually can plant them.)

REMINDER:  those of you with kids who may want to tour our growing farm, come out at 5:30 this Wednesday.

Hello everyone!  This is our first GRUB newsletter directly blogged into our website.  It is very exciting for us to be able to use less paper and to give easy (hopefully) to all o our CSA members and anyone who wants to check it out.

This "issue" is more of an update on what's going on at the GRUB house than our usual spotlight on a veggie or herb.  Things have been moving quickly around here and just want to keep you informed since you are a part of our community.

LEEKS Are Here!!!!!!

"While the leek is often described as native to the Mediterranean, some historians feel its tolerance of cold and its lack of resistance to heat indicate an origin farther north.  The first written reference to the leek is in a 4,000 year old record from the ancient city of Mesopotamian city of Ur.  But it's possible the plant did grow in colder climes, and an unknown people may have brought leeks to the Middle East well before recorded history.

If you recall in a past issue of this newsletter we talked about the difference between a "summer" squash and a 'winter" squash.  A common mistake folks make is to plant the winter squash too late thinking that it grows in the winter.  This will produce no crops in fact the plant will die with the first frost.
