Notes from the Farm

Besides the little planting we were able to do yesterday all the other work has been in the green house. Can you believe we are already planting our peppers and tomatoes. Summer still seems so far away. We also are starting tons of great flowers for the summer. I'm so excited to try some new kinds like love grass and pampas plume. We are going to do a lot of dried type flowers.

Heavy spring rains mixed with brief intermittent flashes of sunshine are good for our drained aquifers and depleted snow pack, but for us have put us back in our seeding and planting schedules. This time last year we had inch high carrots and beets, with the soil tilled and ready  for all the spring planting. As of now our soils are heavy, wet and we can't till yet without soil damage and compaction. We will continue doing every other week pick-ups through March . Thank you for your continued support and for unstanding the wet spring and how it We should start regular weekly pick ups again in April.

Some good news is that yesterday we did get to plant out 4 rows of broccoli and 2 of mixed lettuces, I think there were 6 varieties of lettuce we put in. It looks like a patch work quilt of reds and greens. We didn't think we were going to be able to plant but a few months ago we put down some black plastic for weed control. Then we went our there and lifted the plastic and we were so happy the ground underneath was dry and we were able to till. We busted it out and got some ground hungry plants. The light rain last night watered them in perfectly.

Simple braised greens

Take your greens any kind. My fav is Asian types or kale. Get a skillet really hot with some oil, Chuck some chopped fresh garlic and or ginger in there and then your greens just for a minute or 2. with a little water Finish off with some soy sauce on top.

Simple cold slaw

Grate carrots and thinly slice cabbage, mix with some mayo or apple cider vinegar some raisins or other dried fruit some salt and pepper. You can keep in the fridge for a few days and its a great side dish or a little mid afternoon snack.
