The Community Garden on 14th and Mulberry

shoveling In September 2009 an idea came about to start a community garden at 14th and Mulberry Street in Chico. The idea was that the community in Chapmantown could come together and build a garden. This garden would produce food to feed the neighborhood and for the Jesus Center, a local shelter that provides food and housing for those in need.

hands planting In the following weeks we built seven raised beds and planted our first crops. We have lettuce, chard, kale, spicy greens, spinach, artichokes, asparagus, sweet peas, and herbs planted. Every time we scheduled work days, at least a dozen community members came to participate. When so many people show up to build a garden it evokes pride in our community.

planting in planter We received old wood to build planting boxes. The Durham Worm Farm and Waste Management donated compost. Scott Murphy generously donated funds to build irrigation. Cheryl Cozad donated funds for compost and irrigation. The Law Offices of Kenneth W. Turner donated for irrigation, plants, and future maintenance of the garden.

digging a furrow The dream is that this garden will not only feed those that are hungry but also become a gathering place and a place were people can learn from one another.
